This is an image showing the steps taken in the creation of an insect illustration. Since insects have bilateral symmetry, the best way I have found to draw an insect is to draw one side first, copy, and then flip the copied image in photoshop to create a mirror image for the other side of the insect. After careful placement of the two images together, a complete image is formed and printed out. I placed the photoshop compilation underneath a sheet of Duralene, which is transparent, and started filling in the color with colored pencil. After many layers of colored pencil were applied, a few drops of opaque white was used for those shiny dots that show up. The final drawing was mounted on a piece of white bristol plate.
